Legacy. Every year since 1927, the Stotesbury Cup Regatta has been held on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia. It is one of the oldest and largest high school rowing regattas in the United States. Check out Whitemarsh Hall for a fascinating history of the man who donated the Stotesbury Cup and the mansion he built. Whitemarsh Hall required a staff of 150 and in 1929, $1 million for annual upkeep. As long as someone was willing to finance the house and gardens, Whitemarsh Hall was beautiful and it’s future was secure.

The Stotesbury Cup Regatta has been held continuously since 1927. Over the years, races and trophies have been added to the regatta, culminating in today’s 31 championship events. After that, Stotesbury announced that the rules would be amended and a new sterling silver Stotesbury Cup would be used as a permanent trophy. Since that time, the Stotesbury Cup Regattahas grown to become the largest high school rowing competition in North America.
